The Triple Crown Events
The Carroll County Contesters
(WY3P) and Long Island Mobile Amateur Radio Club
(W2VL) To Host ‘Triple Crown’ Special Event Station(s)
With the arrival of spring, many of us start to think about getting back
outdoors again. Some think about baseball, sailing or hiking and
camping.
Others think about – The Triple Crown. Yes, it’s time for the annual
running of The Triple Crown (The Kentucky Derby, The Preakness and The
Belmont Stakes).
Why is horse racing being discussed in an amateur radio venue? Because
we are going to be running our own Triple Crown operating event! The
Carroll County Contesters (of Sykesville, Maryland) and the Long Island
Mobile Amateur Radio Club (LIMARC) are going to be operating special
event stations on the day of each race. The Derby station will be
operating from Kentucky.
The Preakness station will be operating from Maryland. Both of these
stations will be operated by members of the Carroll County Contesters.
The Belmont Stakes station will be operating from New York (hopefully,
directly from the track at Belmont Park!) by members of LIMARC.
QSL cards will be available for contacting each individual special event
station. Please include a SASE and a ‘green stamp’ (international
stations, please include 1 IRC). In addition, anyone who successfully
contacts all three special event stations will be eligible to receive a
special ‘Triple Crown’ certificate. For the certificate, please include
an oversized SASE, big enough to hold an 8 1/2” x 11” certificate, and a
‘green stamp’
(international stations, please include 1 IRC). QSL and certificate
requests should be addressed as follows:
For The Derby and The Preakness, please send requests to the Carroll
County Contesters QSL Manager, W3ADC at:

For The Belmont Stakes, please send requests to:
LIMARC
P.O. Box 392

Attn: Belmont Event
For the special Triple Crown certificate, please send requests to the
certificate manager, N3VOP at:
Michael D Fisher
715 Robinwood Dr
Mount Airy MD 21771
Attn: Triple Crown Event
We will be operating each event with the following special event call
signs:
For The Derby (K4D)
For The Preakness (K3P)
For The Belmont Stakes (K2B)
In order to maximize accessibility, we will be operating in the General
Class band segments, most likely on 20 through 40 meters. Full operating
details including hours of operation will be posted on each club’s
respective web-sites as the date for each specific event approaches. We
anticipate operating on or near the following frequencies: 21.365,
14.265,
7.265 and 3.865. However, these proposed frequencies will be tempered by
conditions on the day of the event (again, check the web-sites for
specifics). Carroll County Contesters are on the web at wy3p@hotmail.com.
LIMARC is on the web at www.limarc.org.
Special Note! If there is a club or group of operators in Kentucky
interested in activating the Derby event, please contact Carroll County
Contesters as soon as possible. They can be reached at the above U.S
Mail address, or via e-mail at wy3p@hotmail.com.
Team WY3P in Maine, Picking
up
AB/577 Towers

September, 2005
Team WY3P took a road trip to
Maine to pick up 4 AB/577 Towers. The ride up was at night, and the
ride back was early the next morning. This was Nathan, W3ADX's
first time in New England.
The AB/577s are "raw kits" and Clint is leading the
effort to complete the sets so WY3P can have several new towers for the
upcoming contest season.
